Jack's face painting changed him. When he put it on, it kind of became like a covering that represented his uncivilized side. Underneath was the civilized side that he was eliminating. Roger represents brutality and blood lust at their most extreme. Jack is attacking Rodger showing how he is bad pretending to be good outside. Jack can be described as a straight forward guy who does not like shortcuts.
