In my opinion, when kids return to school this autumn, many of them – may be notably those from historically disadvantaged student groups – will begin the academic year with lower accomplishment levels than they had at the outset of summer vacation. This phenomenon, also known as summer learning loss, summer setback, or summer slide, has piqued the curiosity of educational scholars since 1906. We analyze what is known about summer loss and recommend districts and governments working to address the issue.
Several findings of summer loss were reported in an early thorough review of the literature. The authors determined that, on average, kids' success scores fell by one month's worth of school-year learning during summer vacation, that decreases were stronger for math than for reading, and that the magnitude of loss was greater at higher grade levels. Importantly, they discovered that income-based reading differences widened throughout the summer, owing to the fact that middle-class children tended to increase their reading abilities while lower-income students tended to lose them.
