After seeing the shocking statistics concerning what happens to foster youngsters who age out of the system, we were taken aback. Children who had lived their entire lives alone were subsequently abandoned on the streets at 18. This prompted us to launch the We Were One initiative in 2017. We set out to give everything young people needed to become self-sufficient, joyful adults. This entailed assisting with housing, job placement, mentorship, and counseling (Pan, 2021). It was not working, no matter how hard we tried. Our kids could not get or keep work, and without a job, everything else would disintegrate. Employers were unwilling to recruit young people with little experience or lacked the patience to train them.
