The ancient Ghana Civilization flourished between the6th and 13th century in West Africa. Major characteristic features that led to the rise of Ghana include the abundance of gold, iron, copper and ivory as well as proximity and easy access tp the Senegal and Niger Rivers and their tributaries. Thud, Ghanaian kings grew rich from the stockpile of gold nuggets and Ghana's reputation spread to North Africa and Europe, where it was recognized as a "land of gold".
The ancient Ghana civilization began to crumble from the 12th century. Features that led to its fall include: drought, civil wars, the opening up of trade routes in other regions, the rise of the Sosso kingdom and subsequently the Mali Empire.
