Poor readers have lower confidence in general, when compared to better readers.
In an argumentative essay, discuss whether or not you agree or disagree with this statement. Using two books you are familiar with, give examples of how you could use these books to encourage poor readers to improve their reading and boost their confidence. Your essay should be no longer than 1000 words.
I agree with the statement because poor readers are emotionally affected by their abilities to read. Unlike poor readers, better readers can develop reading strategies, determine what they read, familiarize themselves, and understand the content, and this helps to boost their confidence. Poor readers are struggling to attain this position; as a result, they lose confidence because they lack intrinsic motivators to participate. To encourage poor readers to develop confidence, I will consider adopting reading activities that boost self-esteem, choose books correctly and introduce motivating elements in the classroom to reward progressive performance. For example, picture books are suitable to encourage poor readers to gain interest in reading words related to the pictures. Another example is early chapter books; this helps students to make further steps in reading. These types of books are essential for progressive learning for poor readers. I will first use a picture book to help students to realize their hidden reading abilities, and gain interest. Early chapter books will be helpful for students who have developed interest and self-esteem; at this stage, they can practice reading and appreciate their newly gained abilities in reading.
