There are many reasons as to why parents are uninvolved in their children's education. Some the reasons include;
- Work - Working can be an impediment to a parent's involvement with their child's school. For instance, activities that are held during actual class time can often conflict with a parent's work schedule. While some people have jobs that will allow them to leave work for an activity, other less fortunate people may have a boss that won't allow them to attend. Additionally, some parents work two jobs and so are unable to attend any school activities.
- Poor communication - When a school does not communicate information about events and functions with its parents well, there is a good chance that they will not show up to participate.
- Embarrassment - The parents may be illiterate or unable to speak English.
- The parent may be feeling that education is not essential.
Parental involvement is essential for student development and offers many benefits. One of the benefits is that it helps improve student behavior in the classroom. Having parents and teachers communicate more helps students feel more motivated in their classes; their self-esteem and attitudes in class improve.
