During the years 1939–45, World War II, commonly known as the Second World War, was a war that engulfed almost every country on the planet. The Axis powers—Germany, Italy, and Japan—were pitted against the Allies—France, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union, and, to a lesser extent, China (Miller, 1998). World War II was the deadliest and biggest war in history, with 40–50 million people killed.
