During the years 1939–45, World War II, commonly known as the Second World War, was a war that engulfed almost every country on the planet. The Axis powers—Germany, Italy, and Japan—were pitted against the Allies—France, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union, and, to a lesser extent, China (Miller, 1998). In many ways, the war was a continuation of the conflicts left unresolved by World War I, following a tense 20-year pause. World War II was the deadliest and biggest war in history, with 40–50 million people killed. It resulted in the Soviet Union's authority being extended to eastern European nations, allowing a communist movement to gain power in China, and marking a major shift of power in the globe away from Western European governments and toward the United States and the Soviet Union.
