Man vs. Man is commonly seen in literature and modern storytelling and is a type of external conflict. This conflict will most often play out between a protagonist and his or her antagonist, although it can also appear between friends or acquaintances, as well. A conflict arises between the main character and Ma Simanga who suspects that the main character was involved in death of her husband and other children.
Man vs. Society
This type of conflict is often seen between man and the society's beliefs or a governing body. It is an external conflict that involves a protagonist at odds with a ruling body which could be one's family, or social or cultural norms. For example, in the book the protagonist is going against the grain of what his or her society and people expect.
The person vs society conflict works because Sinvula's individual transgression show the cracks in the values of society at large. Even while being self-righteous, the characters refuse to see the flashes of ugliness, the ‘indecent’ lust for violence and others’ suffering in their own behaviour.
The traditional outlook and the modern outlook in life of the characters causes a conflict to arise in the story. Their various personal and societal beliefs aslo create conflicts.
