As a foundation phase teacher, you realised that half of your Grade 2 learners are
demotivated to read books. Their parents are frustrated, and they demand that you
do something to motivate the learners to read.
5.5.2 How will you deal with this challenge and instil a passion for reading in the
learners?

"After nourishment, shelter, and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world" - Philip Pullman. Pullman was indeed right since our culture always revolves around stories. It is through stories that young learners can define their world and begin their journey to love books. Young children love stories despite the different methods the stories are conveyed. Therefore, the fundamental step to make young learners love books is to encourage them to appreciate stories via written texts. Consequently, as a foundation teacher, the first step would be to foster the learners love for reading by reading books aloud with them. The above should be practiced while stocking books for them in a library around the classroom, forming a book club with them and dedicating some time everyday for them to read. Similarly, I will lead by example by showing students my love for reading to inspire a similar culture in them at all times ultimately influencing their reading culture.
