An example of unethical practices that have been reported in Namibia includes poor labor practices and environmental breaches by Ramatex Ltd. The company was established in 2002 by a Malaysian company to take advantage of the duty-free exports to the US market of a few selected African countries. Workers complained of being poorly paid and compensated along with very harsh working conditions. The company used to pour industrial waste into the environment and some of the materials were non-degradable and thus had negative impacts on the environment. It led to complaints from business people that later forced it to close due to reduced demand where people lost their jobs when it shut down its operations in 2008. It also led to loss of government revenue through the taxes that employees used to pay to the government as well as unfavorable terms of trade due to reduced exports abroad.
