According to Piaget, a schema is a cognitive framework or concept that aids in the organization and interpretation of information. Schemas are useful because they enable us to take shortcuts when understanding the large amount of data available in our surroundings. The learning process entails attempting to interpret new information within the framework of existing knowledge (assimilation), making small changes to that knowledge to cope with things that don't fit those existing frameworks (accommodation), and eventually adjusting or forming new schemas to adjust to a new understanding (equilibration). Disequilibrium helps the acquisition of new skills and abilities while also allowing for rapid growth and development.
