Our names are an essential element of who we are. They have strong personal, cultural, family, and historical ties. They also help us understand who we are, what communities we belong to, and where we fit in the world.
Many African individuals have many names, including one from their ethnic group, a Christian or Muslim name, and a name based on the day or time of day they were born. It is not unusual in the Yoruba tradition for each parent and grandmother to give at least one name.
