1) My confusion comes on how the writer set the time during the summer on a sharecropper's farm but placing it after the American Civil War. It helps us understand how racism was instrumental during those times and its relation to Myops' innocence.
It explores the theme of loss of innocence. Myop, the main character, symbolically loses her innocence when she discovers the body of a man who was violently killed by hanging and decapitation. The end of the story states that the summer was over, which figuratively means that Myop has grown up as a result of her experience. She is no longer short-sighted and understands something about the world that she did not know at the start of "The Flowers."
2) 1) The story is about Myop and racism in America. Myop is a carefree child who is forced into accepting the truth of her past and leaves the reader with the inquiry regarding if Myop will allow this experience to affect her in a positive or negative way.
2) The story explores a young girl named Myop's time as a child ending when she discovers the body of a violently murdered man.
3) The story took place sharecropper's farm, It also occurred in America.
4) In the days when the slave trade was taking place in Africa.
5) When Myop realizes that the man had been hanged, she "laid down her flowers," symbolizing the end of her happiness, innocence, and childhood.
6) The man had been hanged, Myop laid down her flowers, symbolizing the end of her happiness, innocence, and childhood.
3) Diction refers to the linguistic choices a writer makes to effectively convey an idea, a point of view, or tell a story.
4) Connotation is the use of a word to suggest a different association than its literal meaning. In the flower by Alice an example of conotation is; A statement of innocence, naivety, and freedom from worries. Flowers: the flowers may represent innocence. When Myop sets them aside, she sets aside her childhood. Rope: the noose may represent violence, racism, and death.
