Reading is taught to children by sounding out words. This method is called phonics. These two approaches — whole word and phonics — had alternated as the preferred method of teaching reading until Goodman introduced what became known among educators as the "three-cueing system."

It is a reading experience for the entire class. A song or poetry on a chart, a huge book, a printed piece, the morning message, language experience tales, a basal narrative, or a trade book might all be used. However, one of the most crucial aspects of shared reading is that all students access the shared text.
