The Minimum Requirement of Teacher Qualification (MRTEQ) emphasises that a properly trained
teacher must have comprehensive knowledge and be able to teach EMS, “determine the sequence and
pace of content in accordance with both subject and learners needs, have an adequate knowledge of
content and learners” DHET (2011:)
1.1.1 Do you think that the minimum requirements for teacher education are realistic given your
understanding of the South African school context? /08/
1.1.2 Do you think it underscores your ultimate expectation of a good EMS teacher if not, what do you
suggest can be included as part of teacher training?
Question 1
Yes, I think the requirements are realistic based on my understanding of the context of the South African School. This is because the South African education system provides opportunities for teachers to train on such skills; teacher training institutes are in a good position to ensure that teachers attain the minimum requirement and offer services to students as expected. These requirements are fundamental in teacher-learner relations and help to achieve positive outcomes for students.
Question 2
No, I think these requirements are the basic things an EMS teacher should have for a good start in a teaching career. The requirements allow EMS teachers to engage effectively in teaching and develop more experiences. In my suggestion, teacher training should include learner-centred training services, cultural intelligence to help address diversities in the learning environment, and behavioural management techniques to increase their competence and abilities.
