How would you convince consumers that self-driving cars are safe?
Answer
Self-driving cars appear to be a wonderful concept in theory. Humans have the potential to save lives while being unpredictable, inattentive, and generally bad drivers. Once the technology is understood, machines will be far superior at driving safely. Putting your life in the hands of a self-driving car, on the other hand, may be terrifying, particularly if you're a pedestrian. Three out of every four Americans are afraid to get into a self-driving car, according to a study done earlier this year by the American Automobile Association.
To alleviate these anxieties and get self-driving cars on the road, psychologists collaborated with automakers. In an article published in Nature Human Behaviour, three researchers from the MIT Media Lab, the Toulouse School of Economics, and the University of California, Irvine examine common problems and provide psychological solutions.
