What is the impact of social media on racism in South Africa (125 words)
Although social media is not real life, the outbursts on tweets and status updates are a window into a much more intimate conversation—one that takes place behind closed doors, in languages that are not universally understood, and in other “safe spaces” where racism can flourish without repercussions. While systematic racism is no longer tolerated in South Africa, casual racism serves a new purpose: it conceals economic and social insecurity, justifies inequalities, produces a false political identity, and keeps the status quo in place. Because of the present global political, financial, and cultural institutions, policies, actions, and events initiated in industrial countries – over which poor countries have little control – frequently jeopardize the well-being of developing countries. Diversified ownership and staff contribute to diverse media coverage.
