Describe the implications that the pandemic has on schools.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought huge disruptions to educational systems around the globe. The initial peak of the pandemic led to the temporary lockdown of schools thus causing significant interruption in students’ learning and disruptions in internal assessments. This interruption has led to actual learning losses and exposed inequalities in education systems. Learners from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds have experienced higher learning losses from school closures due to limited educational resources and technological capability. The pandemic has forced schools to transition from traditional classroom teaching to remote learning systems. Schools in several countries have shown initiative to enhance the remote learning experience by use of social media, telephones, email and other forms of digital technology. Teaching and learner assessment have moved online on an unprecedented scale, though the technique is mostly on a trial and error standard. Little progress has been mad from remote learning, with students from disadvantaged backgrounds experiencing more learning loss. Schools in many countries have resumed to physical learning but have been forced to adopt WHO and their governments’ agencies’ health guidelines such as physical distancing and wearing of masks.
