1.Non-verbal communication is the transmission of implicit messages expressed through nonverbal behavior. There are various types of non-verbal communication, including: facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, posture, body language, tone and pitch of voice among others.

Examples of nonverbal communication from ‘Ain’t* I a Woman?’ by Sojourner Truth include:

• Body posture - this includes when she raises herself to her full height before uttering "And ain't I a woman?

Sojourner expresses outstretched arms and her eyes are on fire as she speaks.

• Tone of voice - Sojourner uses her tone throughout the speech as a form of nonverbal communication. More specifically: she raises her voice to pitch like rolling thunder before uttering "And ain't I a woman?"

When she raises her voice even louder when she repeats "Whar did your Christ come from?"

• Gesture - When she bares her right arm to the shoulder to show her tremendous muscular power while uttering "Look at my arm!"

When she points her finger at the minister who had argued that intellect had something to do with women's rights.

• Oral communication develops personal contact due to its human touch and is thus more effective. From the passage, Sojourner applies a lot of nonverbal communication during her pointed and solemn speech, which makes passing the message on freedom from slavery more effective.
• It is more persuasive than written communication and the speaker can therefore easily win over the other person to their point of view. During Sojourner's speech, there's reaction from her crowd as she delivers her speech, including a buzz of disapprobation and loud and long cheering, something difficult to achieve with written communication.
