Decolonizing Education

In the context of education, decolonization entails confronting and eliminating colonizing practices that have influenced education in the past and continue to do so today, implying that they continue to influence education today (Hall & Tandon, 2017). Diversity without variance is thought to be insufficient for achieving equity and fairness in higher education. Nevertheless, decolonization is important considering that schools have previously been used for colonial purposes involving forced assimilation. Hence, this essay summarizes the importance of decolonizing education and curriculum and institutional frameworks, as well as instructional approaches and implementation that are entailed in decolonization.

Decolonization helps leaners develop their own identities. A more personalised approach to education must be developed in order to eliminate this colonization in school. Reflections, as well as a connection to location and community, are some of the ideas that must be adopted. To address this, rather than putting identities on kids, they should be assisted in developing their own identities.

Rebuilding a school system that supports all students, staff, and instructors is part of decolonizing education. A system that prioritizes the requirements of all children while still being sensitive to the unique needs of each child. Children of color and students from low-income families are now at a disadvantage in our educational system. This is attributable to decades of neglect from our educational system's highest levels. We need to make more room for more diversity in all elements of the system. Whether it's fighting for proactive Equity-based policies in politics or in the curriculum, educators as well as learners from minority/marginalized groups embody the ever-growing diverse populations in our schools.

Teachers and students of color are valuable assets in our educational system, and we must begin to recognize and support them. Teachers and students of color have been pushed out of the narrative for far too long, and are now perceived as outsiders in the classroom and in the debate, rather than benefits to education world in general. All learners benefit when students of color and low-income students prosper. When children succeed, education gets stronger, and instructors have the support of their peers and the larger system behind them. In a stressful, isolated setting, it is practically hard for anyone to learn and grow in a constructive way.

Establishing an equitable system will provide a fairer environment for marginalized/discriminated teachers to enter and stay in the industry, resulting in more diversity in classrooms that reflect the kids they serve. Teachers of color are valuable assets who may contribute to school a unique perspective and experience.
