Angelou's unsuccessful marriage prompted the young 34-year-old to take a different course to West Africa from the United States. Angelou arrived in Accra, Ghana's capital, in 1962. Angelou made a pit stop in Accra on her way to Liberia to enroll her son at university. Upon arriving, however, she fell under the spell of the land and chose to stay in Ghana. Angelou spent two years in Ghana and learnt Fanti. She later proceeded on to Liberia. After being offered a post at Liberia's Ministry of Information, Angelou decided to stay on the continent rather than return to the United States, where she had made a name for herself as a singer, dancer, actor, and civil rights activist.
