A citizen is a member of a political community, which is defined by a set of rights and obligations. Citizenship therefore represents the relationship between the individual and the state, in which the two are bound together by reciprocal rights and obligations.

Citizenship is constituted by three elements. That is;

  • Civil rights- These are rights necessary for individual freedom, freedom of speech, thought and faith, the right to own property, right to conclude contracts and right to justice.
  • Political rights- These are rights to participate in the exercise of political power, as a member of a body invested with political authority or as an elector of the members of such a body.
  • Social rights- These are rights to a modicum of economic welfare and security.

Citizenship in the United Kingdom can be acquired in the following ways:

  1. By birth
  2. By naturalisation
  3. By registration
  4. By adoption
