Makhulu Mamkwayi and her mother had a different set of beliefs. The mother believed in the narrative of the white man while Makhulu did not. She believed in the culture. She communicated with her dead cousin because she hoped she would rescue her from being changed to a zombie by the ritual spirit. Her mother considered Makhulu’s encounter with her cousin a lie because she strongly believed in the white man’s narrative, and believed her niece was dead. In the end, Makhulu was regretful and blamed her mother for not being able to save her cousin.
