Jon Krakauer quotes one of McCandless’s friends, who said that McCandless “was born into the wrong century. He was looking for more adventure and freedom than today’s society gives people” (p. 174). Do you think this is true?

I think the statement is not true. McCandless lives in the right century only that he has distinct views and values on the concepts of freedom and adventure, which some people might mistake for lack of common sense. Today's society gives people all the freedom they need to inspire others and create their paths. That is why McCandless is able to change his traditional name to Alex and take on a dangerous adventure without getting stopped by anyone. McCandless is a perfect example of how society has not imprisoned us. It gives us the power to determine where we want our lives to go.
