Gender-based violence occurs in the everyday lives of people. The vice has been in existence since ancient times. Even though different communities are doing all they can to eradicate this social problem, several factors continue to contribute to its prolonged existence. Precisely, this is the kind of violence directed to an individual based on his/her sexual orientation. Initially, the violence was perceived to affect one gender, especially the females. However, recent decade’s pieces of research indicate that an individual from all sexes can be a victim of gender-based violence. On this note, the violence could be emotional, verbal, sexual, or psychological abuse, economic, educational deprivation, coercion, and threats, among others, in an individual’s private or public life. 

The causes of gender-based violence include harmful norms, culture, and beliefs that contribute to the mentality that a particular gender is superior to the other. In this regard, individuals are initiated to the beliefs as they grow up from their childhood. In most case, the female gender has been a primary victim of these harmful norms. They are perceived to be lesser or weak human beings who may undergo torture at the hand of their male counterparts—this kind of culture bases on stereotypical ideologies to make people believe what they purport. Hunger also contributes to gender-based violence since women are not empowered to remain dependent on men. On this note, they become dependent, which positions them to be misused. Drug abuse can also lead to gender-based violence as people become violent to their partner under the influence of a specific drug. 

The effects of gender-based violence include depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Children who are exposed to gender-based violence, especially from their parents, become mentally sick. They grow up to become criminals or violent since they witness it as a way of life.
