In the epigraph for Chapter 1, Chris states in a postcard dated April 27, 1992 to Wayne Westerberg…”I now walk into the wild.” In Chapter 1, he tells Jim Gallien, “ I don’t want to know what time it is. I don’t want to know what day it is or where I am. None of that matters.” Write about the quotes and/or your assessment of Chris McCandless so far? (An epigraph is a relevant quotation at the beginning of a book, chapter, etc.).
From the postcard dated April 27, 1992, Chris McCandless states that he now walks into the wild. This implies that Chris has now taken a dangerous as well as really adventurous path that is not normal. This statement is ambiguous and could also imply that McCandless has taken a behavior that is very questionable and out of the moral realm of the society. This behavior could either be an immoral behavior or a behavior that is very extreme and not something the society considers normal.
From his second statement to Jim Gallien, Chris McCandless says that he no longer cares what time is, what day it is as well as what place they are. This is a resignation statement and shows that Chris McCandless is at the point of giving up or despair and has allowed things to go in whichever way they come. This also implies that Chris McCandless is disturbed mentally and has been pissed of by the recent occurrences. Linking this with the first statement in the postcard to Wayne Westerberg, we can say that Chris McCandless could be on a very dangerous journey that has resulted in his despair and deflection of his normal reasoning.
