Causes and effects of excessive usage of Social Media on Youth:
Social media can be defined as applications and websites that helps people to interconnect all around the world via the internet. Through these social medias, people can share content, video call among many other functionalities. If you want to be a member of any of the social media, you need to sign-up and create your profile so that you can be able to share and chat with other users who are using the same social media channel.
Social media has gained a lot in the recent past, and this has had some negative effects in the community. According to statistics, almost everyone has one or more social media accounts and the leading group among these are the youths. Research has shown that these social sites have impacted the lives of these youths either positively or negatively. Some of the positive effects of social media among youths include; they get updated with current events around the world. Social media has also helped them network and thus stay connected with their friends and families (Valkenburg & Piotrowski, 2017). Social media has strengthened relationships because people from different parts of the world can communicate to their relatives who are very far from them. Social media like LinkedIn has been used as an employment channel where youths update their skills and can get employed easily.
Social media has negative effects on the youth in that it leads to isolation socially because it reduces face-to-face interactions. Isolation can in turn lead to mental breakdown and depression. There have been cases where youths who are underage have been exposed to online bullying and predators who woos them into sexual acts like lesbianism and gays (Valkenburg & Piotrowski, 2017). Youths spend so many hours online chatting decreasing productivity amongst them. This makes most youths not depended on their parents or guardians for basic provisions. Youths who spend much time online and provide their essential details are susceptible to cyber theft and crimes. Research has shown that some youths tend to be lured into bad groups and cults through online participation.
In conclusion, its evident that social media has had mixed effects on youths. Its upon individual youths to decide on their fate while using social medias. Parents and guardians should also play a part in ensuring that their youth children are not being misled by social medias. Education system should also act in the part of ensuring that youths are taught on the negative effects of social media.
