Helping the poor is a social responsibility that is not only beneficial to the community at large , but also to the philanthropist. The society is full of needy people that without the help of those that are well off, can otherwise lead miserable lives. For instance, without charity organisations a large percentage of orphans would be delinquent, homeless, and eating from dumping sites. Such a lifestyle is risky to their health and can result in life threatening diseases such as pneumonia and cholera. As a result, it is upon the society to offer assistance to such needy groups.

Helping the poor also reduces rates of crime. A percentage of people that commit crimes do so as a result of poverty. Lack of income to meet basic needs can push people to deviant behaviour. Therefore, by helping the poor the society can prevent crime.
