Is it unethical to support kids in need by starting an orphanage?

Tara Winkler talks at this eye-opening on the bad consequences of good intentions against the spread of orphanages in developing countries, in part caused by foreign donors and explains in details the harm done to children when they are separated from their families and are allowed to grow in institutions.

In 2014, the New York Children Without Parental Treatment Working Group and the Secretary General's Special Representative (SRSG) on Violence Against Kids(VAC) worked together to launch a series of international specialist workshops on defense of children against abandonment, child trafficking and exploitation in all care settings. These consultations seek to provide a forum for regional specialists, from governments and civil society to share encouraging approaches, lessons learnt, and recognise success and difficulties in implementing the UN study on violence against children's recommendations

In 2006, members of the Better Care Network created the FBO Extension Committee to encourage better practices in the community in religious orphan care. This committee was officially established in 2008 and is now called the Faith to Action Initiative.

The "Faith to Action Initiative" brings organisations, Churches and people from the Christian faith together in Sub-Saharan Africa, aiming to respond to the needs of orphans and other needy children. The initiative's emphasis is on promoting orphan care approaches that safeguard the importance of family and culture in children's lives.

The Faith to Action Initiative started out as a Committee of the BCN Faith-Based Organization (FBO). The overall goal of the BCN FBO Committee was to engage churches, organizations and leaders of the faith community to promote best practice for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) including the collection of information on orphan and vulnerable children (OVCs), encourage increased OVC support generally, and promote better treatment for children who are orphans and vulnerables.
