From the book, Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, & Fighting To Get Back on the Board
The author kicks off the story with a brief description of an accident that happened while surfing. After 5 minutes of reading I have an idea of the various characters in the family and their love for surfing. Im taken through a tour of all the good surfing spots around Hawaii as the characters go out in search of a good spot to surf. Places like Pauaeaka, the Bay, the Bowl, Wai koko, tunnel beach and the like pop up in the story.
After ten minutes of reading, I have background information on how the parents of the narrator met and finally got married. I'm shown how they both really loved surfing and how that ultimately helped them get together. Down to page 13, the narrator continues to describe the other members of the family namely Timmy and Noah. I'm led to understand their traits in depth. This allows me to get why Timmy, for example, was obviously interested in body boarding.
