Elements of poem used
- Imagery: The word stars in line five of the poem deepens the readers understanding of the fate of the author. A low star would mean a saddened ending or fate or sadness. "My fate is dim, my stars so low" (Florentino, stanza 2).
- Metaphor: used in line 14, "the light of day" to mean when the narrator was born. "when first I saw the light of day" (4).
- Refrain: Words or phrase repeated within the stanza or line itself. Some words like "one, you "are repeated in the poem to stress the theme which seemes to be love. "One" is repeated twice in stanza 1. "You"is repeated 3 times in stanza 6
- Stanzas: The groups of lines in the poem. Each stanza in this poem has 4 lines (Quatrain) and a total of six stanzas.
- Repetition: different from refrain since the repeated words do not have to appear withn stanza or line. In the poem the word "Love" appears in stanza 3 and 6. "to know that it is you I love (6), For even I did love (3).
- Rhyme: There are rhyming word within the lines. For example, endowed/love, there/share. "are endowed to one who is loved, for truly there is one to share" (1)
- Assonance; repetition of vowel sounds. For instance in line one vowel "a" is repeated "What gladness and what joy" (1).
