You are the shift supervisor of ten (10) day-shift security officials, who are employed at Peter
Wholesalers (Pty) Ltd. Peter Wholesalers has sustained serious financial losses owing to
night-time burglaries. The manager at Peter Wholesalers, knowing that you are studying
security management at a university, has requested that you write a report to management
to persuade them to install security lighting to solve the problem. In addition to this report –
and on the basis of the information from your learning guide and the knowledge you gained
through your studies – write an essay on the different types of security lighting and make
recommendations to the Board of Directors on the different areas in which security lighting
could be installed
Security lighting offers a psychological barrier to illegal activity in the area being secured by providing a degree of illumination to clearly distinguish individuals or items. Outside security lighting is classified into four types:
continuous lighting. It is the most common form of outdoor security lighting, may be configured to achieve one of two outcomes: increased projection or regulated lighting. Continuous lighting of glare emerged in jails and correctional institutions.
emergency lighting. Any or more of the other three forms of lighting can be duplicated by emergency lights. In general, the emergency lighting system is used when other services are inoperable due to a power outage or other emergency.
moveable lighting. This system is manually operated and typically consists of moveable search or flood lights located in specific areas that need temporary lighting.
standby lighting. It's Systems are commonly made up of continuous systems, but they are intended for reserve or stand-by use, or to complement continuous systems. When the continuous system fails or there is a need for more light, these systems are enabled either automatically or manually.
