Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a disease condition that specifically affects one's brain cells as well as actions, resulting in an inability to regulate the drug's use. Drug addiction can grow as a result of one's recreational use of a drug, especially in social contexts (Lyman, 2016). It may also be as a result of taking such prescription drugs. Nonetheless, the dangers of addiction differ from one drug to another.

Positive reinforcement or the pleasure-seeking strategy, in which one takes drugs for the pleasure of doing so, negative reinforcement, in which the object of obsession is primarily pain avoidance, reward salience theory, in which the purpose of obsession is primarily pain avoidance, stimulus-response learning theory, and inhibitory regulation dysfunction which is as a result of impulsivity (Palmer & McGeary, 2016). According to these theories, opioid addiction is described by a strong desire to consume the drug, a lack of accountability, excessive spending, a neglected appearance, behavioral changes, and health problems.

The etiology of substance addiction depends on the environment or one's surroundings, social pressure and lack of parental oversight, particularly in the young generation, the decrease in family participation or involvement, genetic predisposition, particularly where there is a family history of drug abuse, and early drug use (Lyman, 2016). These etiological factors may contribute to changes in brain development and therefore addiction. In addition, drug abuse can be caused by an inability to regulate the use of certain legal or illegal drugs, a failure to control or a lengthy period of use of prescription medication, and difficult life situations such as legal problems, depression, emotional and behavioral changes.

There are many techniques that can be used to prevent, intervene, and treat drug addiction, including raising public awareness about the dangers of drug addiction, setting an example for youths by the elderly, especially parents, and reinforcing family ties to avoid any drifts that may lead to drug addiction. Furthermore, adhering to treatment plans will aid in the monitoring of opioid cravings as well as the avoidance of high-risk conditions or environments (Mukamana & Conrod, 2018). Drug abuse can also be treated by a combination of medicine and behavioral therapy. Improving early intervention in opioid addiction treatment can also assist in the battle against this issue.
