Jesus instructs us to pray that God provide us with daily bread (Matthew 6:11). Clearly, Jesus was not instructing His followers to pray only for bread. Bread, on the other hand, had long been a staple of the Jewish diet. Furthermore, in the Old Testament, bread was an important sign of God's provision for His people. We recall how God looked after the Israelites in the desert following their exodus from Egypt. The people started to lament that it would be easier to be back in Egypt, where they could eat delicious food, since life in the wilderness was difficult. God vowed to “rain bread from heaven” in response to these concerns (Ex. 16:4). God miraculously fed His people by offering them bread as he fed them from heaven. Hence, from my experience I would say that GIVE US THIS OUR DAILY BREAD would mean that God is for us all, God is the source of all good and equality, and we should ask one day at a time.

God is For Us All

“Daily bread” refers not only to food, but also to the items we need for our essential comfort and well-being, such as clothes, shelter, and other necessities. For simple survival, we depend on God's gracious provision. God is present in every aspect of our everyday lives, which some of us overlook because we don't have to fight for survival.

All Good Gifts Come from This Source and the Equality

When Jesus advises us to pray, "Give us... our daily bread," He is referring to all, rich or poor. We all have the same basic needs, whether we live in the Midwest or in Haiti. We are fragile, impermanent beings who can't even extend our lives by a day. "our instead of my" Jesus encourages us to identify with others. We are inextricably linked to others in the human world.

One day at a time

This word for daily—epiousion—appear only in the Lord's Prayer. It could be translated as "enough for each day." Jesus is urging us to put our faith in God for today's needs while letting go of our worries about tomorrow. Several things have happened since I started praying to God for our everyday needs. I'm learning to take each day as it comes without worrying about tomorrow. I'm learning to trust in His abundant supply, recognizing that the forms and quantities He chooses to provide aren't always what we'd want.
