How is cultural appropriation related to issues of representation, identity modification, accommodation,
marginalization, and politics in the production of cultural difference?
Cultural appropriation refers to the act of borrowing a particular cultural element from a non-dominant group in an act to oppress the group or cause stereotype.
1) Representation- In terms of representation, cultural appropriation is attributable to the wrong portrayals of a non-dominant cultural element by the dominant group. For instance, a particular clothing or dance may mean a lot to a particular group whereas it may be used in comic shows by another group which is illegal.
2) Identity modification- Culture is a way of identity. For instance, the type of language, food, and clothing contribute highly in identifying an individual’s origin. However, cultural appropriation may cause the identity of a particular people to be breached through modification so as to suit the group who are adopting it. For instance, some cultures prefer music without certain musical instruments using such instruments may cause identity modification.
3) Accommodation- Cultural appropriation highly influences accommodation. For instance, individuals may find it difficult to settle on a region that highly appreciates a certain religion and diminishes the other. This makes individuals from the minority group of worship to feel insecure hence the need to depart.
4) Marginalization- In a society where equality and respect for diversity is not a fundamental aspect, the society tends to focus on the majority group and ignores the rights of the minority. In such a scenario the cultural difference tends to contribute to the overall marginalization.
5) Politics- Cultural differences determine the political path of a particular region. For instance, a region densely populated by Christians may find it difficult to appoint a leader that goes contrary to their beliefs and faith. For example, a person involved in murder cases.
