The basic feature of literature includes timelessness, eternity, universality and permanence. Consequently, literature is further categorized into three types which are primary literature, Secondary Literature and Tertiary Literature. Primary literature capitalizes on original studies founded on direct observation, use of statistical records, interviews, or experimental methods of real practices or the impact of practices or policies. Primary Literature is orchestrated by researchers, contains original research data, and they are normally published in a journal. This kind of literature may include conference papers, preprints and preliminary reports.

Subsequently secondary literature comprises interpretations and evaluations that are obtained from the primary source literature. For instance, review articles and reference works. The professionals within each discipline take the primary literature and examine, generalize and integrate new research. Additionally, tertiary literature comprises of synthesis and collection of primary and secondary sources such as textbooks and handbooks. The purpose of this kind of literature is to give an overview of research and introduce principles and practice within the discipline.
