In a paragraph of not more than 10 lines, explain how phonology relates to morphology. Use two clear examples as illustrations for your explanation. Do not simply define the concepts, but explain the relationship
Phonology refers to the study of sound or sign patterns within a language, and how the sounds or signs are systematically organized to convey certain meaning. Morphology relates to the study of words, for instance how they are formed and the nexus they form with other words. The relationship between phonology and morphology is that words require sound or signs to attach meaning to the word in order to communicate. Without an accompanying sound or sign, a word is just a culmination of letters with the potential to mean something. One example is the word 'advice' which is both a noun and a verb. The sound inflection applied when pronouncing 'advice' affects the meaning that is inferred by the recipient of this information. Another example is in sign language, where there are about 300 varieties. The type of sign language used, eg British or New Zealand sign language, affects the interpretation of information that is trying to be conveyed. Phonology, manifest through inflection, accent etc. and signs is therefore related to morphology for this purpose.
