·  What does it mean to live in a “free country?”

Living in a free country means living in a country where the government upholds and preserves civil liberties of its people. The citizens have the ultimate power in governance and the government does not dictate or control the people’s freedom of expression such as thoughts, speech, voting rights and actions within reason.

·    List 3 countries that are considered “free.”

United States of America, New Zealand, Australia

·    List 3 countries that are considered “partially free.”

Hungary, Ecuador, Colombia

·   List 3 countries that are considered “not free.”

Iran, Libya, Yemen

·    What do you think it is like to live in a country that is “not free” like Russia or China?

Living in a country that lacks global freedom is hard because of state abuse or restrictions on basic human rights. Usually, ‘not free’ in a country is denoted by presence of repressive political regimes, oppressive living conditions for the people, constant crackdowns, lack of freedom of expression and absence of fair elections.

·    Why do you think that China was rated not free while the United States is free?

China was rated ‘not free’ because of the government’s growing restrictions with state agencies, religious groups, press, the Internet, businesses and universities. Although their constitution grants citizens various freedoms, these freedoms are tightly restricted by specific laws and regulations. The US government on the other hand has guaranteed unalienable rights to its citizens. It has upheld human freedom in civil and political rights and has a high degree of press freedom.

·    What kinds of things do you think China is banning on the internet?

China carries out a heavy internet censorship on its citizens. Some of the things that china bans on the Internet include: criticism on the government, access to information on government undertakings, negative coverage on the ruling regime, controversial online petitions and communication with organized groups abroad among others.

·    Many countries that have high “internet freedom” scores also have high “global freedom” scores. Why do you think it is very important for a free country to have a free internet?

A free country that upholds its citizens’ freedom of expression should have free internet because it provides access to information. Internet is an open platform to exercise one’s opinion and thoughts. The Internet is also beneficial to a free country in that it creates collaboration across borders, expands communication and supports creation of new industries.
