Plays are experienced or watched in a tempo which the audience isn't able to select. The reader of a novel will read at the pace of his choice. Another difference is that in a novel the storytelling is complete but for a play, the audience must be in the room and for the performance to happen. For instance, when a reader has a novel he or she can read it anytime he wants while for a person to watch a play until it is performed he or she can't watch.
