Out of the debts is an historical book written by Karen Hesse launched in 1997. Out of the dust is the story of Billie Joe, raised in Oklahoma's Great Depression, whose mother was critically injured in an accident. Although the novel itself is a fictional work, it accurately depicts the difficult lives of farm families during the years of the Dust Bowl and the US government's participation in President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal strategy. For its distinctive style and vivid emotional expression, the book was praised. Out of the Ashes was awarded the 1998 Newbery Medal for Child Literature.
