Describe the steps that are taken during the initial screening of learners with barriers to learning, according to the SIAS policy document
The teacher screens all children on admission and record their information on the admission form, school health program reports, parent and stakeholder reports, and teacher’s reports. This step is followed by the identification of barriers to learning; for example, the teacher identifies the student’s communication challenges by examining their ability to understand what others say, and the ability to express themselves. Afterward, the teacher evaluates the learner’s ability to participate satisfactorily on grade level regarding subject content. The evaluation of behavior and social competence follows. It includes the examination of the learner’s ability to work and interact with others besides following class routines. Then, the learner’s physical wellness is screened. This step is followed by the evaluation of the factors within the classroom and school, that can impact on the learning process. Finally, the teacher screens family, home, and community situation of the learner to find the factors that may impact on the learner’s ability to achieve satisfactorily at school.
