Both formative and summative assessments look alike in that formative assessment focuses on to monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback that can be used by the students to improve learning. The summative assessment is used to evaluate the student learning and overall competencies at the end of an instructional module. They both focus on learning where formative mainly focuses on the process of learning while summative assessment focuses on the outcome.
