Identify ten factors of effective questioning?
Effective questioning is vital in promoting understanding.
1. Once the question is asked, it is important to give ample wait time, which provides students with time to think and respond effectively.
2. Ensure a balance between open and close-ended questions.
3. Use funnel questions that start with general questions that trickle down to more specific ones.
4. The question should be stated clearly, making it easy for students to understand.
5. Use of hinge questions that are quick for students to answer. They help provide an insight into topics that are not well understood and need revisiting.
6. Call and response strategy whereby the teacher asks a question, and the students answer in unison. If the pupils give a wrong answer, the teacher should provide the right response and have them repeat it.
7. Use of whole-class response systems whereby all students independently write their answers and show them to the teacher who will then address the wrong answers
8. teachers can ask questions that require students to pair up and deliberate on the right solutions.
9. Ask probing questions that check how well a student understands a particular concept.
10. Multiple choice questions should include an incorrect option.
