Question #107676

What example of Arbitrariness in language

Expert's answer

Language is arbitrary because words have meaning only as parts of a system and the meaning is solely derived from it's difference grom other words in that system. For example, the words such as moon and sun are arbitrary because they have an English meaning but nothing in those words can bar them from shining at night and during the day. How the population decided to name them is arbitrary.
