You may use the Periodic table to find out the electron configuration and then the electron dot diagrams. For this, the most important information is the group to which the element belongs. Ca, Ne, H and Li belong to the groups 2, 18, 1 and 1, respectively. Therefore, the number of the electrons in their valence shells (outer shells) in neutral state are : 2, 8, 1, and 1, respectively. Their simplified electron configurations are:
Ca: [Ar]4s2
Ne: [He]2s22p6
H: 1s1
Li: [He] 2s1.
