1. A carboxylic acid will be converted to the corresponding carboxylic acid chloride in the presence of hydrogen chloride. A nucleophilic substitution reaction occurs in which the OH group of people he carboxylic acid is replaced by Clicking group from hydrogen chloride.


2. a. The acid chloride will be converted to other halide in the presence of the basic anion of those halides. Say for example, in the presence of Br-, a nucleophilic substitution rxn occurs in which Bromine replaces chlorine in the acyl halide.


b. The acid chloride can be converted back to the starting carboxylic acid through hydrolysis in water in the presence of mineral acids or alkali as a catalyst.
