The nitration of benzene occures in strongly acidic conditions while heating. The nitrating mixture is 2 moles of concentrated H2SO4 per 1 mol concentrated HNO3. The nitrating particle, NO2+, appeares in the following reaction: 2H2SO4 + HNO3 = NO2+ + H3O+ + 2HSO4-
