Potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide react with triglycerides resulting in their hydrolysis and production free glycerine and fatty acid salts. Sodium hydroxide is used to makes bar soap as the process of saponification using sodium hydroxide results in the formation of solid opaque soap. In contrast, the use of potassium hydroxide leads to the formation of liquid translucent soap. Products made with potassium hydroxide have a higher solubility, in particular in warm water.
