Beguyer de Chancourtois was the first scientist who use the atomic weight to found periodicity. He arranged the elements as a continuos spiral around a cylinder from the bottom to top. He divided this cylinder into 16 parts and Oxygen was taken as 16 (because of atomic weight 16) and used as the standard element. But this systematization wasn’t exact and useful that is why another scientists John Newlands and Dmitriy Mendeleev modernized the periodicity of the chemical elements to useful and more correct database.
