Question #260622

What mass of ZnCl2 can be prepared from the reaction of 3.27 grams of zinc with 3.30 grams of HCl? (MWZn=65.38 g/mol; MWHCl=36.458 g/mol;MWZnCl2=136.286 g/mol)

One mol Zn reacts with 2 mol HCl

3.27 g Zn = 0.0500 mol Zn

3.30 g HCl = 0.0905 mol HCl

The quantity of HCl is not quite double the quantity of Zn. Therefore, the HCl is the limiting reactant.

2 mol HCl produce 1 mol ZnCl2

0.0905 mol HCl (1 mol ZnCl2/2mol HCl)(137 g ZnCl2/mol ) = 6.20 g
